FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Customised Assistive Technology

How long will the project take?

The project timeframe really depends on the project itself, as you can image a smaller project such as modified cutlery will be quicker than building some customised steps.  We also need to factor in who is able to take on the project or if we need to do this in the workshop.  We will often give you an estimate of time when we supply you with the quote.

How much will the project cost?

The cost of projects vary as everything is completely customised.  For the more complex projects, we are able to supply you a quote based on our knowledge and understanding.  However, for easy order items, we can provide you with an instant price.  No work will commence on the project until we have received funding approval.

Do you have Therapists that can help?

Yes, we have two lovely Occupational Therapists with lots of collective experience with children and adults.

How do you assess if this project is viable to proceed?

The project will be reviewed by our team for safety, compliance, suitability as well as what is available on the market.  If it meets all the criteria we will contact, you with a cost.

I just want to find out if my idea is even feasible, how can I get an answer?

This is a question we get often and unfortunately there is no simple answer as each project is assessed and we often need as much information as you have to be able to give you even a yes or a no.   This is why will encourage you to complete a Project Request Form which will help us with our evaluation.

Who will be making my project?

The person creating and building your project depends on the skills, materials required and location.  This may be a volunteer or our workshop team, often for many projects it is a combination of both.

Are you an NDIS registered Provider?

Yes, we are!

Can you provide projects outside of Brisbane?

Yes, we are a state-wide service, however there may be some restrictions due to volunteers available and the type of project you require.

Volunteering

Can I work from my home workshop?

Yes, you can, most of our Technical Volunteers work from their own home.

What if I am going on holiday?

This is fine, just let us know when you are going and we won’t bother you while you are away.

What if I need help with my projects?

Not a problem at all, you will have a team leader who can help you with any challenges you may be having but also the assistance of our therapists and workshop staff too.

Why do I need a Blue Card and Police Check?

This is actually a requirement of our funding body for all our volunteers.  The good news is we can help with all the paperwork and will cover the cost of the Police Check.

Do I need to pay for materials myself?

This depends on the project and where you are located, many times we can supply you with the materials, other times it is easier for you to purchase them yourself.  We can supply vouchers and of course will reimburse you for the costs as soon as we receive the receipts.

What if I accept a project and am unable to finish?

This is not a problem, just let us know as soon as you can so the project can be re-allocated to another volunteer.

Can I volunteer as part of my Centrelink obligations?

Unfortunately, due to the nature of our work flow, we are unable to offer this option.

Freedom Wheels

How to book an assessment?

Firstly, we will require a Project Request Form.  This form gives us lots of information to let us know if our bikes will suit your child and if we believe we can help you.  Once we have received your form, we will contact you to arrange a date for you to trial a bike.  This is all free of charge.

Can you visit me at home?

Yes, we can.  We can also meet you at your usual therapist appointment or perhaps at school.  Sometimes we can provide clinics for you to attend with other children.  We may have some restrictions in some areas of Queensland.

Do I need a Therapist involved?

Absolutely yes, we have experts that can help with the bike prescription, but it is the Therapist that knows your child best and how to make sure we can the best outcome.  If you don’t have one, we can use our in-house therapists if local.

How can I pay for this?

Many of our bikes are funded through the NDIS scheme or you can choose to pay for this bike privately.  There is no cost for us to provide an assessment.

How much will it cost?

This is a question we are asked many times, and each time it is different.  This really depends on the bike, for example a bike for a 3 year old would be significantly differently for a bike for a 12 year old.  Some children need extra support whilst other’s just need help with balance.  Once we have done an assessment we can give you a much better indication of cost.

What sizes of bikes can you provide?

Our range starts from a 12inch bike for ages 2+ and goes right up to 24 inch bikes for people size 150cm+.

Can I use my own bike?

No unfortunately,  just because we use a range of bikes that we know work perfectly with our supports.

How long will I have to wait to get my bike?

This is difficult to answer as many times we are governed by the funding bodies, however once we receive approval you can expect for the bike to take 4 – 10 weeks.

Are you an NDIS registered provider?

Yes, we are.

What if my bike needs repairs?

In the unlikely event that you need any repairs done on your bike, give us a call and we will be happy to help where we can.

ControlAble

Are you able to do a home visit?

This really depends on where you are located.  If you live in the Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Ipswich area then this is not a worry, however if you live outside these area’s we may need to do an assessment by video link.

How long will it take to get a controller?

This really depends on your needs.  For example you may just need a few buttons moving on an existing controller, or a fully extraction which would be much more time consuming.  It also depends on our waitlist too as this program is pretty popular at the moment.  When we do the quote though, we will be able to give you a bit of a timeframe.

Can I use funding from my NDIS package?

Yes – we are a registered NDIS provider and there is a line item for this time of adaptation under Assistive Technology.

What if I have limited movement in my hands?

Many clients we have seen have limited movement in their hands and are unable to physically hold the controller.  If this is the case, no problem.  We will look at other areas of your body to place controls, perhaps you mouth, head, knees or toes.  We will find a way!

How much will it cost?

This depends on your needs, simple modifications would not be as expensive as higher needs that would need mounts etc.  We can provide you a free quote based on your ability but generally speaking costs would range from $600 – $1,500.

TAD Assist

Why do you only service the Gold Coast/Logan area?

At the moment we only service this area due to demand in this area.

What home modifications do you provide?

We can help with wall mounted rails, ramps, keysafes, chair raisers, drop down rails, external rails, non-slip bathroom treatments.

What don't you do?

We do not do any major hour renovations, house and garden maintenance.

Do you provide funding for clients?

No unfortunately we don’t.

How long will it take?

Once a Therapist has provided us with their assessment and we have received approval to proceed, we will be able to provide the work within 2 – 3 weeks.

Do I need a Therapists Assessment first?

Yes, we are unable to provide an item without it.  My Aged Care can help you locate a therapist if you do not have one.

Are you a registered My Aged Care Provider?

Yes we are!

How can I pay?

Once the work has been completed and you have received an invoice, you can pay over the phone by EFPTOS, do a bank transfer or we can set up a Centrepay option for you.

TAD Equip

What items do you provide?

We can provide second hand shower chairs and stools, over toilet frames, wheelie walkers, walking sticks and height adjustable chairs.

Why do you not provide more items?

There are two reasons but the main one is storage is a challenge for us and second is resources. We would love to be able to provide more items to more people and still provide a quality service, however at the moment this is not possible….. at the moment!!

Is the item cleaned and maintenance checked?

Yes, all items have a general clean and are checked by our workshop to make sure they are safe for re-sale.

Can you deliver?

We can deliver for an extra cost to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Ipswich.  Just ask for this and we will let you know how much it will be.

What items can I donate?

At the moment, we are looking for shower chairs and stools, over toilet frames, wheelie walkers, walking sticks and height adjustable chairs.

I have a donation that’s in good condition but is broken, will you accept it?

It depends what it is, sometimes unfortunately the cost of repair is more than the walker is worth second hand.  If you are unsure, call us.

Why is this program limited to the Brisbane area?

We would LOVE to provide this service state-wide, however unfortunately at the moment we are unable to due to resources and storage.

What is the cost of items?

Each item is individually priced depending on the type of item and the condition.  What we can promise is that it will be at least half of the price of the retail price.  We would be happy to quote you.

What makes this service different to other second-hand equipment services?

We have one awesome reason why this service is unique – our lovely Occupational Therapist will assess every request to make sure you are receiving the correct piece of equipment.  Our aim is to provide you with a piece of equipment that is perfect for your needs and that will hopefully save you some money too.  Oh and a delivery service by one of our awesome volunteers is pretty special too!

How can I pay?

Once you have received the item and it works well for you, you will receive an invoice which you can pay over the phone by EFPTOS, do a bank transfer or we can set up a Centrepay option for you.
